I had been meaning to make a video on this character for a while. I made a Hector video previously and so this completes the pair! I'm a fan of Ancient History and even chose it as part of my university degree. Achilles is the most complex and interesting character in the Iliad, a poem said to be written by the mysterious figure called Homer.
The Iliad is all about the rage of Achilles after a falling out with Agamemnon and the death of Patroclus in what was the most eventful time of the Trojan War.
A wild, emotional warrior that cannot be slain so easily. Even when he died by Apollo/Paris' arrow, he remained undefeated in hand-to-hand combat. He was so legendary and regarded as the greatest Greek, even the likes of Alexander the Great wanted to be like him, and is said to have kept a copy of the Iliad under his pillow! It is a hard video to make, but I tried to include most about his ambitions and put a particular emphasis on war and the recoils of being a great warrior. Troy (2004) portrays that emotion brilliantly with Brad Pitt and the other leads. Whilst the historical inaccuracies are very evident, this film is still epic and memorable to me. The Iliad truly is an epic story and it's crazy to think that after thousands of years, it's still spoken of and popular to this day.

Yes, Troy was real, the archaeology found in the area is quite authentic and shows great hints of warfare/ destruction by natural disasters around several different phases of the settlement's existence. Therefore, I believe in the conflict, I just don't think events or names occurred as described. I don't trust the literary sources to be true. I prefer to let archaeology testify to the written sources. The Iliad is a poem, rather than a document aiming to record everything accurately, and is written by Homer, who is also a mythical figure as we know little about them. It could be more than one person who wrote the Iliad etc? Even so, they are written hundreds of years later and are not contemporary to the Trojan War's timeline. You have to ask, where did they get their information from, and how reliable is their source of information? Most historians used information passed down by word of mouth through generations of oral poets and so things get increasingly wrong through time and miscommunicated like saying a name incorrectly. Either that or the author is using historical documents that are lost to us present archaeologists/historians now. Whilst some literary sources can be of use, there are just so many factors in judging the reliability of many historical literary sources and how we should use them.

For me personally, the significance of the Iliad and the myths are what they meant to the people that we know did exist because they believed it. Thank you for watching this vid:)

Two things. First, somehow by adding this comment today, I have deleted all the comments from all the viewers that this video has ever had and I have no idea how that happened.

Second: one of the comments suggested I list the name of the song used in the
End Title Sequence. Which I agree I should have done in the first place. So if it's not
too late, here it is:

The End Title Track is "Just An Illusion" by Imagination
The version used in the movie was edited by the film makers to
go with the flow of the end title visuals. There are many versions
of this song available on YT and some of them are pretty close to
the movie version.

One of my favorite movies from the 80's, in particular the ending.
Something I've noticed about movies since then is the absence of either
an opening, or closing sequence that includes aerial footage.

This may sound wierd to some, others may agree and yet still some may
be indifferent. Nevertheless it is my contention that one of the elements
of a good film is the opening or closing sequence. I do conceed the notion
that the complete absence of either one or the other also contributes to a
good movie.

Cases in Point: All The Presidents Men which has no opening but one of the worlds best films.
Sometimes a great opening seuence won't win it any awards either.
Example: The Taking of Beverly Hills, or Sudden Impact. Decent movies but not spectacular.

My example for this topic is F/X. Great opening AND a great closing/ending sequence,
which I am posting tonight.

Feel free to post any opinions, comments, whatever. I believe in free speech, even
when it doesn't align with my perspectives. Afterall, virtues are only meaningful
when they're inconvenient to defend.

ABOUT IMAGINE
John: ‘Imagine’ is a song conceived in my head without melody. The first verse came to me very quickly in the form of a childlike street chant ‘da da da da da dee dee da dee da ee a eeeh’. The piano intro I’ve had hanging around in my head for a few years – the chords and melody followed naturally from this.

The middle eight was ‘conceived’ to finish off the song. I think it works as a song. Of course, there is always room for improvement – otherwise I wouldn’t make any more. The third verse came to me in an eight-seater plane. It’s a song for children.

Yoko: ‘Cloud Piece’: ‘Imagine the clouds dripping, dig a hole in your garden to put them in.’ This is not a piece of poetry. Poetry to me is nouns or adjectives. This is verbs. And you have to do them. These are all instructions and when you just do it, then you start to understand it.

John: ‘Imagine’ was inspired by Yoko’s Grapefruit. There’s a lot of pieces in it saying like ‘Imagine this’ or ‘Imagine that’. If you get a copy of Grapefruit and look through, you’ll see where I was influenced by her. ‘Imagine’ could never have been written without her. And I know she helped on a lot of the lyrics but I wasn’t man enough to let her have credit for it. So that song was actually written by John & Yoko, but I was still selfish enough and unaware enough to take her contribution without acknowledging it. The song itself expresses what I’d learned through being with Yoko and my own feelings on it. It should really have said ‘Lennon/Ono’ on that song, because she contributed a lot of that song.

Alan White (drummer): Every song we did on Imagine, John would make us read the lyrics and insist that we understood the meaning of the song before started playing it. That had quite an impact for me.

Klaus Voormann (bass): When we played ‘Imagine’ and heard the lyrics, the possibility that this was going to be such a big song was apparent. It definitely was. I even thought I didn’t want to play on it because it was so amazing with just John playing piano. It was so true and honest. That would have been enough. I hope you’ve got a version of just John playing it.

Phil McDonald (engineer): ‘Imagine’ was one of the easiest tracks to record, almost all live, in a few takes. We mixed the track at Tittenhurst and Phil Spector added strings on top of the stereo tape in the USA.

Yoko: John and I were both artists and we were living together, so we inspired each other. And the song ‘Imagine’ embodied what we believed together at the time. John and I met – he comes from the West and I come from the East – and still we are together. We have this oneness and ‘the whole world would eventually become one’ is the sense that we will all be café-au-lait colour and we will all be very happy together. All these instructions are for people for how to spend eternity, because we have lots of time.

John: If you can imagine a world of peace, if you can imagine a world with no denominations of religion – not without religion, whatever religion is – but without this divisive ‘My god is bigger than your god’ business.... Then, if you can imagine the possibility, then it can be true.

Yoko: ‘Imagine’ is a complete vision. A succinct bible of truth. It will start to unfold as you believe in it. The film? Well, it just happened naturally. I was well aware of the symbolism of everything – closing and then opening the shutters to let the light in. It’s rather personal, but I had a definite reason why I smiled at the end, in addition to loving being next to John.
